Welcome

Dear Disciples,

God calls us to follow Jesus Christ, together. That holy call requires us to gather, across geography as well as across differences in worship style, culture, language, and sociopolitical differences. The prophetic call from Isaiah to enlarge our tents means trusting God is larger than our current or personal understanding of God. Yet strengthening our stakes paradoxically requires being all the more firm about what it is that unites us! Wrestling with the balance of radically welcoming and being faithful to traditions is itself as old as the church.

Over the next few days, may we get to know one another better. May we listen to the challenges many in our churches face. May we listen to the creativity and faithfulness others have used to rise to challenges. May we be willing to teach, but all the more open to learn. One way our church is working to reflect the diversity of Canada is an increase in French at this convention as we welcome the leaders of our newest congregation in Montréal! Occasionally hearing a language you do not know is a challenge, of course, but it also an act of hospitality. 

We have so much to offer one another. Thank you for bringing your gifts of presence with us. I also thank the local hosts of St. Thomas and Mapleton Churches for their work in making us home with them this summer.

Bienvenue

Chères disciples, chers disciples,

Dieu nous appelle à suivre Jésus-Christ, ensemble. Cet appel saint nous invite à nous rassembler, par-delà les distances géographiques ainsi que les différences liturgiques, culturelles, linguistiques ou sociopolitiques. L'appel prophétique d'Ésaïe à « élargir nos tentes » signifie faire confiance que Dieu qui dépasse notre compréhension actuelle ou personnelle. Pourtant, paradoxalement, renforcer nos piquets exige que nous soyons d'autant plus fermes sur ce qui nous unit ! La recherche d'un équilibre entre un accueil radical et la fidélité aux traditions est un défi aussi ancien que l'Église elle-même.

Puissions-nous, au cours de ces jours, apprendre à mieux nous connaître. Puissions-nous être à l'écoute des défis auxquels beaucoup de nos Églises sont confrontées. Puissions-nous entendre parler de la créativité et de la fidélité dont d'autres ont fait preuve pour relever ces défis. Puissions-nous être disposés à enseigner, mais surtout ouverts à apprendre. Une façon pour notre Église de refléter la diversité du Canada consiste à faire une plus grande place au français lors de ce congrès, alors que nous accueillons les responsables de notre toute nouvelle paroisse à Montréal ! Entendre parfois une langue que l'on ne connaît pas représente certes un défi, mais c'est aussi un acte d'hospitalité.

Nous avons tant à nous apporter les uns aux autres. Merci d'offrir le don de votre présence parmi nous. Je remercie également les communautés hôtes de St. Thomas et de Mapleton pour le travail accompli afin que nous nous sentions chez nous en leur compagnie cet été.
